Beautiful Gdansk was a member of the Hanseatic League and has for centuries been a major North European port. Many Dutch influences can be seen in its architecture.

It has a number of interesting museums as well as plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.

Every August there is the biggest craft fair in Europe – Jarmark Dominikanski – which is definitely worth visiting.

There are shops selling amber in most towns, particularly in Gdansk. First look in Leba where amber is much cheaper!

The Szymbark visitor's centre is built around a timber factory where wooden houses are made. There are restaurants, shops, a museum, an example of an original house from Siberia, and a Russian train – plenty to keep children happy, including the upside-down house which is furnished. You can go inside – upstairs and downstairs!
